Greek Government: NO Bike Lane For You!!!
Getting around Athens, and many other Greek cities, has often been difficult due to the number of cars on the road. Sure, newly opened mass transit subway lines have helped, but the system is sill not finished, and many neighborhoods are still miles from the nearest station. A plan to add bike lanes in up to 80 populated areas was supposed to help, but now due to budgetary constraints, it seems those plans are on hold - despite studies showing that in heavy traffic, cars travel at an average speed of 8 km/h / 5 mph, while cyclists average around 18 km/h / 11 mph.
