New York City announced they will be adding an additional 200 miles of bike lanes in the five boroughs over the next several years. The first 40 miles of new routes are expected to be in place by the end of 2006. The city will also be improving signage around cycling paths/lanes in an effort to remind motorists of the presence of cyclists. The new plan represents a cooperative effort by the health, transportation, parks, and recreation departments, and comes on the heals of a new report that shows 225 cyclists were killed in New York City over the past decade.
