Verizon Offers Bones in Motion Workout Tracking

A while back we covered a new cell phone based application from a company called Bones in Motion (BiM) which allowed athletes to track speed, distance, and route using the embedded GPS technology found in most cell phones today. While the service was originally available just through Sprint, BiM recently inked a deal with Verizon Wireless (VZW) to offer it on a handful of Get It Now enabled phones like the Samsung SCH-a930 and SCH-a990, LG Chocolate (VX8500), Motorola V325, RAZR V3c and RAZR V3m. The $10/month service, in addition to providing workout tracking, will also allow subscribers to access an online account where they can store and analyze their workout history. VZW says it’s hoping to attract potential subscribers with the appeal of convergence – one device acting as phone, sports computer, and in some cases even MP3 player. How the BiM service will appeal to the cycling market remains unclear since the VZW press release (which lists cyclists and tri-athletes as potential users) does not explain how the service should be used – for instance, can it be used safely at speed, or is it intended as a purely hands-off while moving tacking device. If we can get a response from VZW we’ll let you know…
